Five changes you should know about the stock footage industry

Web Conferencing No Comments »

Stock footage are so commonly used we do not notice them. From news to commercials, films to television programmes, stock footage are used everywhere in the media. Since its usage in the early twentieth century, one primary force drives its prevalence — stock footage are cost effective.

While this simple economic rationale continues to fuel the stock footage industry today, technology has changed its nature in terms of licensing, distribution, pricing, source and usage.

Here are five changes you should know:

  1. You can use stock footage for perpetuity.
Technological advancement enables good quality reproductions of copyrighted works, and this has led to the exploration for more flexible, user-friendly forms of content licensing.
While much of archival stock footage are licensed as rights-managed works, stock footage can now also be bought under the royalty-free license.

The main difference between the two forms of licensing are:
    1) Duration of use: Rights-managed footage are licensed for a limited amount of time; Royalty-free footage can be used for perpetuity.

2) Cost: Rights-managed footage are charged based upon various usage considerations, such as the purpose of production, the size of its audience and the duration of usage; Royalty-free footage are charged based upon the format required.

  1. You can download stock footage instantly.
The advent of technology has not only enabled stock footage to be stored in digital format, but also created file-downsizing softwares and connected the world via high broadband speed, setting the necessary framework to buy and download stock footage online.
  2. You can buy stock footage more cheaply than before.
Buying rights-managed footage are generally considered to be a cheaper and more convenient option, as compared to hiring a crew and cast to obtain the required shots.
However, royalty-free stock footage are based on an even more competitive pricing business model, making them viable options for cost-constrained projects.
  3. You can make a living out of stock footage.
Traditionally, stock footage are recycled content from previously produced works (usually news or film). Today, there are professional stock footage creators who make their living out of creating and selling stock footage.
  4. You can act with dead people in your new movie.
With technological advancement, stock footage are no longer just used as establishing shots or cutaways. They can now be creatively manipulated for more interactive usage.

AAC vs AAC+?

Web Conferencing No Comments »

As online sound broadcaster I had to personally put to the test the differences between AAC and AAC+.
First know that AAC and AAC+ is the replacement for MP3. AAC is designed for high-bitrate  applications ex. 128 Kbps or better and AAC+ for lower-bitrate applications 96 Kbps or lower.  Please note that I have based these numbers on the following:

1. Many encoders for AAC will provide bitrate options from 16Kbps - 320Kbps
2. Many encoders fro AAC+ will provide bitrate options from 16Kbps - 96Kbps

My concern for testing both versions of the AAC format came when we decided to broadcast in true CD quality onine at www.BeHeardRadio.com. We knew that to a complish CD quality using MP3 we will need to use 192Kbps a starting point, being 256Kbps the right bitrate to give use the quality we where persuing. AAC allows us to have CD quality at a lower bitrate. The question that came to mind was which of the 2 formats (AAC and AAC+) could deliver CD quality at the lower bitrate?

While testing the different bitrates a little surprise came to light! - Please note that the codec we use to test our audio files is from MainConcept

16Kbps = AAC+ Peforms better than AAC

24Kbps= AAC+ Peforms better than AAC

32Kbps= AAC+ Peforms better than AAC

48Kbps= AAC+ Peforms better than AAC

56Kbps= AAC+ Peforms better than AAC

64Kbps= AAC same  or better than AAC+

80Kbps= AAC Peforms better than AAC+

96Kbps= AAC Peforms better than AAC+

128Kbps= AAC Peforms better than AAC+

You can see that AAC performs better than AAC+ if you use

AAC vs AAC+?

Hello friends at BeHeardRadio.com!

16Kbps = AAC+ Peforms better than AAC

24Kbps= AAC+ Peforms better than AAC

32Kbps= AAC+ Peforms better than AAC

48Kbps= AAC+ Peforms better than AAC

56Kbps= AAC+ Peforms better than AAC

64Kbps= AAC same  or better than AAC+

80Kbps= AAC Peforms better than AAC+

96Kbps= AAC Peforms better than AAC+

128Kbps= AAC Peforms better than AAC+

You can see that AAC performs better than AAC+ if you use a bitrate higher than 64 Kbps.  At 64Kbps quality is near-CD but not CD quality! it is clear that AAC+ is great for limited bitrate are great quality compare to any other format. In other words, 48Kbps AAC+ is equal to 80 Kbps MP3.

It was clear to us that the right bitrate to truly achieve CD quality is 128Kbps AAC.  This bitrate compares to MP3 at 192Kbps or better.

Conclusion: if you are planning to broadcast in CD quality either use AAC at 128Kbps or MP3 at 192Kbps or better! AAC+ is great for movies and near-CD quality at 48Kbps-64Kbps using any bitrate higher than this and AAC will perfomr better and AAC+.

MS netmeeting is free but it ties you up in knots with Windows Messanger and banjaxes the whole system

Surely there's a better system out there?

Thanks!

Wedding DJ

One of the important things that you must do is getting a service from the best wedding DJ in town.  Being a music DJ is not only by having the skills to control all the gadgets and play all the music that you want for your event.  It is more than that.  Moreover, since wedding DJ has high professional fees, it is must for you to find the best DJ that you can hire.

However, how would you know if the wedding DJ that you are taking to is the best one?  First is to gauge the personality of the DJ by interviewing.  By simple communication, you would already know the personality of your DJ.  Can he build good connections with the clients?  This is because the DJ would not be staying in front of his equipment throughout the event.  There would be times when the DJ has to talk to the guests especially during some intermission.  With this, the client should be able to build comfortable connections throughout the event.

Another characteristic of a good wedding DJ is that he should be available enough to discuss the details of the event.  Remember that since the DJs are working for you, you should have the music that you want or is best for the wedding.  The DJ should be able to do meetings with you to discuss these matters.  Do not get a DJ that cannot set a proper schedule to talk about your concerns.

Another characteristic is that the DJ should be flexible.  We know that change is the only permanent thing in this world and due to some inevitable circumstances; you might find yourself altering some of the previously planned schedule.  With this, you can explain this properly to the DJ and thus work accordingly.  A DJ that is not willing to accept the changes may have some issues in terms of their professionalism.

Wedding DJs should take their playlist into consideration.  Weddings do have dances right?  There would be songs that would not be fit for everyone.  There would be always be someone who will felt left behind.  The DJ, using the types of songs that he has, should encourage everyone to take over the dance floor and enjoy themselves.

You will find some wedding DJ services in the wedding directory.  This will provide you some information on their works and professional fee.  But if you do like details of their work, then you can simply log on to their website and check their profiles.  Once you find their profile interesting then you can contact them and do business with them.

Doing the guidelines above would direct you to the best DJ.  So in terms of your wedding music needs, you can simply contact the DJs for their services and you will surely enjoy the wide selection of music that they have.  A good DJ would really make your event wonderful and at the same time unforgettable.  Do not think twice.  Just love the music through the DJs’ selections.

Zune Pass - Microsoft’s latest all-out-war on Apple’s iTunes

Web Conferencing No Comments »

In the past, I used to be amazed at the marketing genius of Microsoft. Even before their products were launched, they quickly and seamlessly integrate their way into the mainstream vocabulary of personal computing. But lately Apple seems to be doing just the same with their iPods and iTunes. In fact, Apple’s huge success with the iPod and iPhone is boiling over into the PC arena and more people are now talking “MAC” than “PC”. Microsoft is definitely nervous over this fact and they have been trying to reverse this status quo with many campaigns. The most recent addition is Zune Pass.

What is Zune Pass?

With a monthly Zune Pass music subscription, you can download millions of tracks from Zune Marketplace website for $14.99 a month. You also get to keep 10 of your favorite songs each month to add to your permanent collection. If you drop your monthly subscription, you still can keep your 10 songs (for each month that you had the subscription).

Will it work?

Microsoft claims that to fill a 120GB iPod it takes a whopping $30,000. I did the calculation and it is true. A 120GB iPod can hold 30,000 songs and when you multiply that by $1 for each song purchased on iTunes, you get $30,000. Sounds great for a marketing pitch but it is misguided. I read somewhere that on an average, people only have 375 songs stored on their mp3 device, with iPod owners having a slightly larger average at 504 songs. For people like me, who download less than 10 songs a month, Zune Pass does not make a difference. But for someone who usually downloads more, Zune Pass is definitely worth exploring.
