Making Your Presence Known Through Music

Since time immemorial, music has played a major role in man’s daily activities. Even before Man started to speak or write, he has already made music by humming or by thumping his fists. Today, Man has not only harnessed sounds and molded them into something pleasing to the ear, but has also fashioned it in such a way that it entices other people to take notice of a certain product or service.

The aim of any business is to make an impact to the consumer’s minds long enough for them to remember their product and service, and one effective way of making an impact is to appeal to a person’s five senses one of which is hearing. Of all the senses, it is “hearing” that could last for a long time. This is clearly the case with what is known as the “Last Song Syndrome”. Take for example the song “I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing”. The mere mention of the title conjures to mind images of people holding a bottle of Coca Cola.

Take note, however, that you cannot just use any music to market your product or service. Here are some of the things that you need to consider when making use of music for your marketing strategies:

1. Your company’s target market

Do you like to appeal to the younger, hip-hop generation or are you going more for the baby boomers? Are your clients more of the high-end, Enya-loving type or are they more of the playful, “Lady Gaga” group? A mismatch between the music genre and your target market will make your marketing strategy fail.

2.  Your business’ personality as well as the nature of the product

If what you would like to market is aromatherapy oils and candles, then you should go for relaxing and soothing sounds. If you are selling sporting goods, then an upbeat sound would be more suitable. If you are selling baby products, it would be a bad idea to use hip-hop music. You should go for those that are in line with nursery rhymes.

3. Whether you own the copyright or not

Majority of people think that they can just pull out any music from the internet and use it as back ground music. This could definitely get you in to a lot of trouble. Other people, on the other hand, go for free sound clips. Although this is a pocket-friendly way, most of these sound clips are not actually what you are looking for with most of them being monotonous. Recording your own sound clip is also a good idea only if you have the right equipment for recording and for “cleaning” your recording. Of course you would not want to sound like the recording was made from your own backyard.

Music is a powerful marketing tool. Used properly and even the most unknown product could suddenly be in the spotlight. Used in the wrong way and it could spell disaster even for the most popular brand.
